The famous social network received a heavy penalty for sharing children's data
Meta faces a fine of €405 million for violating the privacy of young Instagram users' data.
According to Neowin , Instagram has been fined by Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) for sharing the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of children who have signed up for the service as a business or creator. .
DPC fined Instagram up to 405 million Euros, making the social media platform the second largest rule-breaking platform ever.
Instagram was fined 405 million euros for sharing children's data.
Until last summer, Instagram automatically shared the contact information of younger users if they were using a business or creator account.
It is widely believed that the operation has affected millions of children across the European Union, but no specific numbers have been provided by the DPC. When children's contact information is shared, it exposes them to harassment by others.
Details of the fine are not available on the DPC's website yet, but they are planning to release full details next week. Previously, the agency had issued a fine of up to 746 million euros against Amazon to handle the company's possession of unauthorized data.
There is likely to be more bad news for Meta coming from the DPC in the coming months, as the agency says it has six other investigations into Meta. The DPC has yet to disclose what it is looking at, but it wouldn't be surprised if the fines were even larger.
