Many old Apple iPhones suddenly received good news

Apple has suddenly released an update for iOS 12 for devices affected by the newly discovered security vulnerability.
Several outdated Apple iPhone models are now receiving a surprise update from the company. Apple advises consumers to download and install the iOS 12.5.6 update on their devices in a support document released on August 31, 2022.

Earlier, a research team in California claimed to have found a security flaw. An attacker could run malicious code by taking advantage of a vulnerability in WebKit, the technology that allows developers to render web pages inside programs. Apple claims that an unnamed security researcher discovered the problem.

In addition, this vulnerability also appeared on more recent devices and was addressed by Apple with the iOS 15 upgrade in August 2022. According to Apple, another bug fixed by the iOS 15.6.1 update does not affect iOS 12.

Many current iPhone and iPad models cannot be upgraded to iOS 13 but must use this new version of iOS 12. Users are advised to go to Settings if you are still using iPhone 5s, iPhone 6/6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, or iPod touch 6, then go to General and select Software Update.

iOS 12 is an operating system that's been available since 2018, so it's no surprise that Apple no longer regularly releases updates for devices running iOS 12. The most recent security update took place in May. September 2021. The team at Apple considers the WebKit violation to be quite serious.

Apple also states that it has information that "this vulnerability may have been actively exploited by an attacker" on its website. Therefore, users need to install the update immediately the update on their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.
